On March 20, 1987, LaQuita McClurkin gave birth to Ashley Hope McClurkin. She was the second of five siblings, three sisters and one brother, Ashley was a joy to be around, whose laughter was full of life. Her love was children; always trying to find ways to help them. Once Ashley overheard me and a friend talking about how she was going to get clothes for her son who was coming home. Without saying anything, Ashley bought the son an outfit and gave it to my friend. As a young lady with few means, she never considered the effect on her own life. She only wanted to ensure that she could help this young person.
Ashley attended Prince Georges’ Community College for Early Childhood Development and worked at several day care centers. She also wanted to further her studies to become a child advocate.
Ashley gave her life to Christ before she left this world. I am reminded of one particular day Ashely and I were talking and I told her if anyone hurts her, I would hurt them. She looked at me and said, "Mom, I’m not yours. The Lord just loaned me to you.” All I could do was smile and say, well said!
On March 31, 2012, Ashley was murdered by one of the girls she knew who ate at our table, slept over at our house, and attended several of our children’s parties. Jealousy is an enemy of life and that’s what took Ashley’s life.
When I think of Ashley, I am reminded of her love for children, her radiant smile, her contagious laugh and her zest for life, and my heart smiles. Whenever I see a child, I think of the joy she brought to my life and the joy she had in her heart for children.
